The Mike Carney Arts Centre presents All That Glitters is Not Gold, a bold and thought-provoking exhibition by Townsville artist Lisa Ashcroft.

Working with textiles and sculptural forms, Ashcroft combines sequins, lace, novelty items and intricate hand-stitching to create works that are visually playful yet conceptually powerful.

At first glance, the pieces appear whimsical and kitsch, but on closer inspection they explore themes of consumerism, political corruption, discrimination, healing and the complexities of the human condition.

Developed over the past three years, the exhibition brings together a cohesive body of work, including pieces originally created in the UK and reimagined in Australia.

The “glitter” is intentional, reclaiming visual language often dismissed or gendered, with each stitch reflecting transformation and care—some works containing over 100 hours of hand stitching.
