Description

'The World' as it's affectionately known, is a scenic gold mining city that's big on history and character. From a chance discovery of gold in 1871 by a young Aboriginal horse boy Jupiter Mosman and the proclamation of a goldfield in 1872, Charters Towers soon turned into a bustling metropolis, which in its heyday boasted being the second largest city in Queensland! So large was Charters Towers to become, that at the height of the goldrush the town included 11 crushing mills, 65 hotels and one of the very first regional Stock Exchanges in Australia, which still stands proudly at the intersection of Gill and Mosman Streets.

Today the pace is a little less hectic, with visitors able to explore the rich heritage of Charters Towers in their own time. Explore National Parks on foot, cycle or 4x4 while discovering the pristine, eco-wilderness areas. Bring your caravan or camping gear and set yourself up in a choice of excellent, award winning caravan parks with all the creature comforts, or choose a free riverside camp and immerse yourself in nature and an authentic Australian experience.

For those less physically adventurous, the myriad of exciting discoveries, amazing stories and stunning examples and trails of the great explorers of the past, the nation's militiary and mining history that eminates from Charters Towers, once the second largest city in Queensland, will astound you.

Charters Towers offers a real Australian outback country town experience only a 90 minute’s drive from the coast. What are you waiting for!
