Pentland was established in the mid-1850s, becoming a critical rail and communication junction in this period. The discovery of gold, followed by the rise of the timber and cattle industries, assisted in maintaining the township’s early thriving position.

Description

Today, the small town, with an estimated population of 250, offers many historical and natural attractions such as the historical Railway Station, Norwood Lockup, the beautiful Burra Range Lookout over the amazing and largely unexplored pristine wilderness of White Mountains National Park and a plethora of flora and fauna for the enthusiasts to explore.

For those experienced in the road less travelled (and with 4x4 capabilities) a drive on the Desert Uplands Trail will see you at Lake Buchanan, a shallow salt lake about a metre deep when full and covering an area of approximately 350 square kilometres. The water is almost four times saltier than the ocean and, of course, the vegetation and birdlife is spectacular. For more information on this trail, ask for the “Five Regional Drives” publication at the Charters Towers Visitor Information Centre.

Located on the Overlander’s Way, just 107kms west of Charters Towers and 140kms east of Hughenden, Pentland is a place to look out for. The township offers facilities you’ll need when travelling including food, beverages of all kinds (it is Australia!), a well appointed caravan park, fuel and a great laidback atmosphere. Time your visit so you can try your luck at the horse races and enjoy the friendly and special atmosphere of an authentic Queensland country race meeting.
