Greenvale is located 203 kilometres north of Charters Towers along the Gregory Developmental Road. Greenvale is the home of the Three Rivers Hotel made famous by Slim Dusty with the song of the same name. A stop here is a must.

Description

Treat yourself to a cool, refreshing drink and tasty bite to eat in the shady oasis at the rear of the hotel. Inspect the magnificent “Sausage” tree thriving in the lush green surroundings before you wander back to the Greenvale Caravan Park for the night.

The township was built in the 1970s, opening its doors to mine workers in 1973 when the Greenvale Nickel Mine started operations. The population of Greenvale today is 150, yet prior to the Greenvale Nickel Mine closing its doors in 1993, the township had a population roughly estimated to be 3,000.

Greenvale is in the midst of gem fields and areas of valuable minerals. The Lava Plains, approximately 80 kilometres north of Greenvale, has a designated fossicking area for those interested, although permission needs to be obtained from landowners. The NORNICO Nickel-Cobalt and Scandium "Tri-Metal" Project is located between the townships of Mt Garnett and Greenvale.

Greenvale is a welcomed stop between Cairns and Charters Towers; a little outback oasis to see and experience. Whether you’re heading north or south, it’s a good idea to fill up before you leave from the well equipped service station located just before the entry to the main road, Gregory Development Road.
