Located 89 kilometres east of Charters Towers, the heritage-listed township of Ravenswood was once a thriving gold mining town.

Ravenswood is a must-see historical town, south of the Flinders Highway. In 1868 while mustering cattle, Marmaduke Curr stopped to scoop up a drink of water from Elphinstone Creek and saw specks of alluvial gold in the bottom of his pannikin.

Description

Two gold mines are in operation in the area. A large open cut mine behind the town and an underground mine at nearby Mount Wright, located approximately 95 kilometres south-west of Townsville and 65 kilometres east of Charters Towers. Resolute has a 100% interest in the mines through its subsidiary Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd. A great viewing platform has been constructed, accessible from the Clare Road, from which you can see open cast mine workings.

Outdoor attractions such as White Blow Environmental Park (a huge quartz outcrop), a Showground that also offers camping with good facilities, a golf course, a swimming pool and tennis courts are popular.

Don’t miss a visit to the historic buildings, including two original hotels, the Railway Hotel and the Imperial Hotel. Visit the historic Court House and learn stories about the people who made Ravenswood. There any many original buildings in Ravenswood that still operate - the general store, a church with its own special ghost story, private miners’ cottages and the school buildings, to name a few.

There are a number of short distance walking trails with interpretive signs throughout the township. Make sure you collect a copy of the trails’ map from the Courthouse or Thorpe’s building and discover some amazing sites and stories this region holds, both natural and man-made, as well as stories of the life and times around this incredible heritage-listed township.

Burdekin Falls Dam on Lake Dalrymple, Queensland’s largest lake, is located 80 kilometres south of Ravenswood and holds 1,860,000 mega litres at full capacity. In other words, it holds more water than Sydney Harbour!

The Burdekin Falls Dam is an excellent and popular weekend or overnight stopover and is a great water sports playground with boating, picnic and BBQ facilities. Fishing permits are required so please ensure you have one before you head off.

No camping is permitted on the dam foreshore. However, camping facilities, powered and unpowered sites, operated by Sun Water, are available nearby. No bookings are required, but for more information you can phone Sunwater on 13 15 89.
