Charters Towers, with its unrivalled architecture and unique history, is a beautiful inland town located approximately 130kms south west from Townsville, approximately 480kms north of Emerald and 250kms east of Hughenden and is known as the gateway to the outback.

There are three major highways that transect the region, and they are:

  • The Lynd Highway (north - south through Greenvale and Charters Towers);
  • Flinders Highway (east - west through Mingela, Charters Towers, Balfes Creek, Homestead and Pentland); and,
  • Clermont Highway, also known as Gregory Developmental Road (north - south from Charters Towers through Belyando Crossing).

The major tourism routes of the Great Inland Way and Overlander's Way, which includes these the abovementioned major highways, intersect at Charters Towers and include sights and scenes as vast at the ochre coloured outback to the crystal clear waters of the Coral Sea and a diverse range of historical and natural wonders.

Great Inland Way

The Great Inland way starts in Sydney and takes in much of central New South Wales before reaching the Queensland border at Hebel. The Queensland leg of the Great Inland Way road trip extends 1863 kilometres from Outback Queensland to the Coral Sea, beginning on the New South Wales border through to Cairns in the tropical north and includes Charters Towers.
